Nomads coach goes ‘awol’

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers head coach Meck Mwase has not been reporting for duties for a week amid reports that he has some grievances with the Lali Lubani Road outfit.

The club’s chief executive officer Panganeni Ndovi confirmed the coach’s no-show, but declined to comment further.

Mwase was last on the touchline on November 2 when the Nomads faced Silver Strikers in the semi-finals of the Airtel Top 8 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe. Wanderers lost 1-0.

When the Nomads faced Mighty Waka-Waka Tigers in a TNM Super League match on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, assistant coach Bob Mpinganjira was in charge as Wanderers won 5-0.

Wanderers technical director Yasin ‘Titch’ Osman said in an interview yesterday that he too does not know why the coach is not reporting for duties.

On whether he had reached out to Mwase, he said: “Well, I have tried to call him a couple of times and either I cannot reach him or he does not take the calls.

“So, management is trying to get to the bottom of the issue.”

However, a source confided in The Nation that when Mwase stopped reporting for duties, the Nomads assigned one of their directors David Kanyenda to check on him.

“The coach told counsel Kanyenda that he had some grievances, including alleged sabotage suspicions within the technical panel, but the issue in being looked into on a broader view” said the source.

Repeated efforts to get Mwase’s comment yesterday proved futile.

The former Flames coach took over the mantle at Lali Lubani Road in an interim capacity in May this year following the resignation of Burundian Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.

Mwase was confirmed as head coach in September, three months after Ramadhan’s departure.

Under his tutelage, the Nomads were booted out of the FDH Bank Cup and the Airtel Top 8 by FCB Nyasa Bullets and Silver Strikers, respectively.

But they are still in contention for the TNM Super League in which they lie second to the Bankers. They are also in the Round of 16 in the Castel Challenge Cup. n

“E-ticketing offers convenience for all football stakeholders in the management of cash. Football fans have an opportunity to purchase their tickets anytime while on the other hand, league managers have total control of the match revenues,” he said.

Sukasuka said the league sponsor was geared for the switch across all TNM Super League matches through deployment of adequate resources.

Reacting to the development, Silver Strikers chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said: “As Silver Strikers, we are excited for this progressive initiative. Our only plea to the authorities is that between now and when these games will be played, there should be aggressive sensitisation campaign so that this new development reaches all places.”

Creck Sporting Club board chairperson Muhammad Selemani described the development as a milestone.

He said: “It is a good initiative if they will manage the payment syestem properly.

“This is syestem is capable of empowering the clubs if properly managed. Cash payments have resulted to loss of large amounts of money through counterfeit tickets which are sold to unsuspecting fans.”

Selemani said he hopes all the clubs will embrace the initiative.
