North parties team up,root for federal system

The 2025 FDH Bank Cup champions will pocket K45 million, up from K35 million, the sponsors FDH Bank plc have announced.

This year’s runners-up will get K20 million while semi-finalists will take home K8 million.

FDH Bank plc senior manager for marketing and communication Ronald Chimchere announced the prize money adjustment yesterday during the competition’s preliminary draw in Blantyre.

He said: “We are very happy with what we have seen in the four years. That’s why we are here. We are back here for season five in 2025.

“We’ve seen teams playing good football, players emerging from the FDH Bank Cup which is something that we are happy with.

“This also ties in because we are the sponsor of the [Malawi] national football team and we know that FDH Bank Cup provides a platform for players to emerge and also find their way into the national team, which is a good.”

The increase in the prize money also means the total sponsorship package is up from K150 million to K250 million.

Chimchere said the increase is a response to the rise in cost of goods and services.

He said: “The teams that are participating have a lot of logistics to look at. That’s why we said it will be very important to increase the package.”

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) general secretary Alfred Gunda thanked the bank for the increased sponsorship.

He said: “I must thank FDH Bank for continued support towards  not just this cup sponsorship, but football sponsorship because FDH Bank does sponsor the other side of football which is the national team as well.”

The 2025 competition will see south, north, centre and eastern regional leagues as well as newly-introduced National Division League clubs battling out in the preliminary round to identify 16 teams to join TNM Super League sides in round of 32.

Gunda said with three tiers taking part in the FDH Bank Cup, it makes it the biggest cup.

He said: “You will also appreciate that this year we have introduced a new second-tier of our football in the National Division League, which is also participating in this competition.

“This tells us that we have the three tiers of our football taking part in this competition.

“My message to the participating teams is that we have always been proud of good football and let us give quality football.”

Last season, Blue Eagles, who were later promoted to the TNM Super League, became the first lower league side to win the cup after beating Bullets on post-match penalties.
