The urban culture in Malawi is booming with a great deal of music, lifestyle and of course stunning fashion tastes.
Influenced and powered by the urban music spree, Chimwemwe Christopher Munthali, better known as Cee, grew wings to dare the fashion industry.
Cee’s move makes the Munthali family extend a mile further in urban couture. His brothers US-based Chazz (Chawezi Munthali) and locally-based Kabuzi (Khumbo Munthali, co-partner of Nde’feyo Entertainment) are well known with their artistic touch to urban music.
And now England-based Cee is the brains behind Nyasa-star clothing line. Yes, the Nyasa-star label was hatched to represent Malawi on another level.
“It’s music that inspired me towards having my own clothing label especially hip hop and reggae which goes hand in hand with urban fashion. We cannot always wear foreign brands all the time. We need our own brand that represents us as Malawians. This gave me much desire to make this Nyasa star clothing line,” elaborated the 34-year-old. According to Cee, ‘Nyasa-star’ means ‘Malawian-star’.
“I felt that every Malawian is a star by their own right and we are capable of doing anything because we have it in us,” he said.
The label was born in June this year and it has since claimed remarkable success in England, USA and Ireland in the diaspora.
“The response has been pretty good. Right now I am concentrating on my brand awareness and a website is in the pipeline so people can easily place orders across the globe at the click of a button,” said Munthali.
Currently, Nyasa-star boasts of T-shirts (v-necks, round necks and golf) and hats (snap back caps). However, the man behind the clothing line says Nyasa-star would add hoddies and sweat shirts to its family.
“In the meantime you can only get Nyasa-star label in Blantyre and we are coming soon to Lilongwe and Mzuzu,” he said, adding that urban fashion fanatics can follow him on twitter for latest designs and updates ‘ceemunthali@nyasastar’ or email on email@example.com or check the Nyasastar page on Facebook.
