Over 50 volunteers apply for Africa Netball Championship

A ‘convincing’ number of people have applied to serve as volunteers during the Africa Netball Championship at the Blantyre Youth Centre from June 24, the Sports Council has confirmed.

Council’s officer Ruth Mzengo said over 53 people had shown interest to serve in various capacities in sectors such as transport, security, accreditation and logistics.

“The figure is encouraging only that some people do not seem to understand the whole concept. They think it is a full-time job. Having volunteers is important. It can help us save. It is a service to the nation,” Mzengo explained on Saturday.

She said the council would, before deploying the volunteers, explain to them about the concept on volunteerism.

In May, the council placed advertisement in newspapers calling for people to apply and serve as volunteers during the event. Big sporting events such as the Fifa World Cup also engage volunteers.

Sports administrator trainer Dr Mark Tembo recently called on sports associations to fully embrace volunteerism. Volunteers render their services for free with experience gained, friendship and skill as among the motivating factors.
