Parties bemoan unfair voting process

Political parties have accused the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for poor election preparations, saying this resulted in unfair voting process.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila said in an interview there were a lot of challenges that affected the election on polling day.

prisoner1“This is strange considering that MEC started preparations for this election long time ago. We expected voting materials to be available at all polling centres before May 20,” said Kabwila.

She said some Malawians got involved in fracas because of frustrations since they waited for the polling day for a long time.

“It is saddening that people are still voting while the results are being counted. This is impacting negatively on voters who can change their minds easily after seeing how some parties are performing,” said Kabwila.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) secretary general Jean Kalirani said she could not deem the process free and fair.

“Problems started arising during voter registration and verification. And stoday [Thursday] people are still voting while votes are being counted. This is not fair,” said Kalirani.

However, People’s Party (PP) deputy spokesperson Ken Msonda said there was unfairness in the counting process and not in the voting process.

“The results are not justified. The machines used for the process were being hacked. Some people were doctoring the figures. Phones that we (PP) bought for our monitors in all polling centres were also being hacked,” claimed Msonda.
