Parties share by-election spoils
If unofficial results from the June 30 by-elections are anything to go, no political party has asserted its dominance as results point to sharing the spoils.
The results show the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP), People’s Party (PP) and independent candidates all projected tp carry the day.

In Balaka Mulunguzi Constituency, DPP candidate James Makhumula is set to get the seat after polling 7 311 votes, ahead of independent candidate Ireen Mambala, who secured 6 462 votes.
The DPP is also leading in Kanjuni Ward in Machinga Central East Constituency, where Twabi Lali garnered 2 351 votes against independent Chimango Chinyama’s 764.
On the other hand, the closest contest is in Machinga Mikoko Constituency, where independent candidate Ishmael Japani leads with 4 935 votes, narrowly ahead of United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Ibrahim Ojesi on 4 853. DPP candidate Francis Haiya trails with 3 974 votes.
PP is poised to claim Uliwa Ward in Karonga South Constituency, where Robert Koyi Kondowe has polled 2 800 votes against DPP candidate Wilson Mzumara’s 1 609.
Meanwhile, the MCP appears set to retain Lilongwe City Bwaila Constituency, with Precious Kabambe leading on 4 707 votes, well ahead of DPP’s Mike Chimzukira, who has 2 725.
Malawi Electoral Commission is expected to announce official results today.
Political analyst Augustine Magolowondo, said the results reinforce Malawi’s fragmented political landscape.
“The MCP has demonstrated it still has a foothold in the Central Region, but its performance in the South remains weak.
“The DPP continues to command significant support in the South, though not enough to claim national dominance. The PP’s victory in the North also shows that smaller parties remain politically relevant,” he said.
