The last three encounters of the 12-game finals between candidate masters Chiletso Chipanga and Alfred Chimthere in the inaugural Paul-Mike Individual Chess Tournament will take place this weekend at Area 18 Lodge in Lilongwe .

Sports Council in Blantyre hosted nine of the final games, but Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) publicist Gilton Mkumbwa said yesterday they have changed the venue to allow Lilongwe-based chess fans have a feel of the match.

“Lilongwe fans asked for part of the final games to be played at their backyard,” said Mkumbwa.

Despite having home-ground advantage in this weekend’s games, which will determine the winner of the ultimate K50 000 (about $125) prize, it will be a miracle for Chimthere to upset Chipanga’s chances of taking the glory.

Chimthere will need to win all the last three games to be crowned champion while a single win will do for his Zomba-based opponent. At present, Chimthere has 3.5 points whereas Chipanga has 5.5 points.
