Police condemn Mitundu riots

Central West Region Police Commissioner Peter Chasweka has condemned violence that broke out in Mitundu, Lilongwe last week.

During the fracas, 36 houses and property of relatives of an ex-convict, accused of killing a motorcycle taxi (kabaza) operator were torched.

Speaking on Monday at Traditional Authority (T/A) Chingala’s headquarters, Chasweka said it was unfortunate that people took the law into their own hands following the murder.

He said: “It is unfortunate that violence erupted here last week whereby houses were torched and property was stolen. So far, we have arrested five people and more arrests will follow. Lawlessness has no room in this area and even beyond.”

Chasweka called for coexistence among the communities, urging them to protect people with albinism.

Lilongwe district commissioner Lawford Palani asked the community not to overwhelm the police with avoidable incidents.

He said: “Let the police work on other pressing issues. There should be peace because violence is not good as it is an embarrassment to the society.”

In his remarks, T/A Chingala said he will not entertain or shield anyone breaking the law.

“We will report to the police anyone found breaking the law. Those who instigated the torching of houses and stealing of property were just misguided individuals and we will ensure that they will face the law,” he said.
