Malawi up-and-coming artist ProVoice, real name Lameck Mwenebanda, has disclosed plans to feature Jamaican dancehall icon Popcaan in his new album.

In an interview with On the Arts, the budding star says he feels it is proper to take his talent beyond borders in order to gain recognition.

“I respect Malawian artists but still I want people to take my music more seriously and create a platform to be recognised outside Malawi that is why I have decided to involve an international artist in my next album,” he said.

He said most artists are happy being known in Malawi but he wishes to go beyond the borders of Malawi and be known worldwide.

Speaking on his recent project in which he has done a remix of Slippery and Wet by Jamaica’s Nyanda of Brick and Lace, ProVoice says it was his way of seeing how far he can go with international riddims.

“I took the chance to approach Nyanda, through her manager, requesting her to grant me the chance to come up with a remix for her song.

“Fortunately enough, she came back with feedback telling me that she liked the song and that is being played in her country,” he claimed.

ProVoice added: “My experience with the remix has also made me realise that there is potential in me and I can make a better musician. Malawi is a small country and not known by many but if we aim to work with international artists we can surely put our country in the spotlight. I have been taking my time to come up with good music,” he said.

He said that he took the initiative to send his music to different selectors and producers to sample his music but also open up opportunities for him be known outside Malawi.

ProVoice started his career in 2007 as a dancehall artist, a genre he has maintained up until now.

He has come in the spotlight this year after his songs Love Fever and Rainbow started enjoying airplay, not only in Malawi but also in Nigeria, Kenya and Jamaica.

The album he is working on is expected to come out early next year.

Besides music, the 22-year-old is a student studying Information Systems at the Malawi College of Accountancy.
