Malawi Red Cross Society head of planning Patrick Duncan Phiri has said the charity organisation is constructing 88 houses for Cyclone Freddy survivors in Chiradzulu, Phalombe and Zomba districts to cost K616 million.

He said this on Saturday at Bodza Primary School in Chikwawa when the organisation donated the final consignment of relief items to 350 households.

Phiri said they are building 52 houses in Phalombe, 32 in Zomba and six in Chiradzulu.

He said after the response phase, they will continue to assist the needy in their recovery initiative phase such as building houses, social cash transfer and maintenance of some schools which were used as evacuation camps.

He said: “We are now moving from response to recovery phase. In recovery, our focus is to see that people who are affected are resilient and able to pick up their lives.

“We have sourced funding to construct 88 houses. Construction of these houses is in progress so that someone must have a better place to stay.”

Phiri also commended their local and international partners for supporting them to reach out to cyclone survivors.

Chikwawa district disaster risk management office representative Patrick Phiri thanked Malawi Red Cross Society, saying they have been supportive since the disaster hit some parts of Southern Region.

Group village head Jana of Traditional Authority Makhuwira in Chikwawa also appealed to the beneficiaries not to sell the relief items.
