Social Cash Transfer Programme hailed

People from Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District have commended the Social Cash Transfer Programme for transforming their livelihoods.

One of the beneficiaries, Billiat Benford, said he bought an ox-cart, a motorcycle and ventured into livestock farming after investing the money he received under the programme.

“I bought fertiliser and invested in farming that helped me to raise money to buy a motorcycle which I use for taxi services,” he said.

Benford also said he bought an ox-cart which community members hire to transport their produce from the gardens.

Another beneficiary, Grace Rihiwa, said she bought a cow in 2019 and runs a small-scale business to support her family.

However, Ntcheu District Council principal gender officer Phales Chizule said the male dominance in controlling finances in families is negatively affecting the implementation of the programme.

Nevertheless, the official commended the programme for bailing out some women from poverty.

“We have seen that some women are doing well as they are saving their money in village savings and loans groups,” she said.

Social Cash Transfer Programme is a social protection programme run by government targeting ultra-poor and labour-constrained households by granting them support in form of cash transfers.
