Sulom rebuffs Karonga on game postponement
Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has defended its move to reject Karonga United’s request to postpone their TNM Super League match against Nyasa Big Bullets scheduled for this afternoon.
Ingwina Ya Karonga asked for the postponement, citing fatigue.
But in an interview yesterday, Sulom general secretary (GS) Williams Banda said they turned down the club’s request due to the tight schedule they have between now and the winding up of the league this Saturday.
He said: “The issue of Karonga United is true, considering the exegesis of the football calendar which is supposed to end on November 19.”
Karonga GS Ramzey Simwaka attributed the team’s recent poor results to their tight schedule.
He said: “We have been on the road since we lost to Bullets [7-0] in the Airtel Top 8 quarter-final. After that we travelled to Dwangwa for a league match where we lost to Mafco FC 5-0.
“Then two days later were were in Kasungu. As if that is not enough, this Wednesday [today] , we are supposed to face Bullets in a league match.
“We requested Sulom to consider shifting the game to a later date, but they refused.”
Simwaka said they have spent about K5 million on credit arrangemets on vehicle hire, fuel, food, accommodation and allowances.
“We are a community team with no sponsor and we need to find money to pay our service providers,” he said.
Karonga are 11th in the 16-team league with 31 points from 29 matches. Today’s game against the champions will be their last.
