Voting for outstanding players starts

Nomination of outstanding players who lit up the 2022 TNM Super League started yesterday through voting with Super League of Malawi (Sulom) providing the guidance on the process.

Sulom  general secretary (GS) Williams Banda yesterday said all the 16 top-flight league clubs’ captains, head coaches and technical committee heads  will cast their votes.

He said they will vote for the Player of the Season, best goalkeeper, defender and midfielder while the Best Striker Award is automatically given to the top scorer.

Was named last season’s best player: Idana

Said Banda: “Each team will have three votes. The head coach, team captain and general secretary, who usually heads the technical panel, shall be eligible to vote.

“To avoid conflict of interest, the coaches and captains can only nominate players from other clubs. This is standard practice.”

Banda also said the media will also vote upon getting clear guidelines.

“After the nomination process, a special committee responsible for competitions at Sulom will scrutinise the nominations to ensure that only the deserving contestsnts are rewarded,” he said.

The Sulom GS said the nomination process will run for 10 days and will end on November 15.

Football analyst Kevin Moyo said when nominating, those entrusted with the task “should consider players that made an impact on results as well as contribution to overall performance of their respective clubs”.

He said: “Discipline is also very key.”

On his part, legendary commentator Stevie Liwewe Banda said: “Consistence in performance, regular game time, dedication and discipline should be the key factors.”

The Player of the Season will cart home Williams K2 million, the Golden Boot Award winner will get K1 million while the best goalkeeper, defender and midfielder will receive K500 000 each.

The outstanding players and coach will also get residential plots in Lunzu, courtesy of Sulom’s parners Ana A M’mudzi.
