Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has rescheduled the FDH Bank Premiership match between Mighty Wanderers and Karonga United to Wednesday next week at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre.
But the top-flight league runners have kept mum on what will happen to the fans who paid to watch the same match, which was initially scheduled for Kamuzu Stadium on April 26 as a launch game, but was postponed following a stand-off between Sulom and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) over the state of the stadium.
Sulom president Gilbert Mittawa referred The Nation to chief executive officer (CEO) Faith Mzungu-Vilakati, saying: “That is more of an operational issue. Feel free to talk to the CEO.”
However, Vilakati further referred The Nation to Sulom general secretary Williams Banda, saying: “Please talk to the general secretary, who is also the chairperson of the fixtures and game management committee.”
Banda could not be reached for comment by press time yesterday.
The postponed match raised K17 million in gate revenue which was shared among the stakeholders, including Sulom, FAM and the two teams.
The standard ticket for Open Stands was K6 000 and some fans demanded a refund.
One of the fans Fredrick Thom filed a formal complaint to Sulom, FAM and the Competition and Fair Trading Commission that the cancellation without immediate resolution amounted to unfair consumer practice, citing misrepresentation and negligence.
FAM operations director Gomezgani Zakazaka yesterday said they cannot intervene “because the issue is under the jurisdiction of event organisers, in this case Sulom”.
