Sulom to abolish GS, treasurer positions

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it will aboilish positions of general secretary (GS), vice-general secretary (vice-GS) and treasurer to allow for smooth operations of the secretariat.

Sulom president Brigadier General Gilbert Mittawa said in an interview yesterday that the flagship league body’s constitution will be amended before the next elections.

“Once adopted, during next year’s elective AGM [Annual General Meeting], there won’t be positions of GS, vice-GS and treasurer,” he said.

In an earlier interview with Wa Ganyu Facebook Page, the Sulom boss disclosed that they had an executive meeting recently where it was agreed that they should pave the way for the secretariat to fully take over the administrative operations of the league.

He said: “A day after unveiling the FDH Bank Premiership sponsorship, we met and agreed that time has come to give the secretariat the powers to administer the operations of the league.

“The institution is growing and, therefore, we don’t need a GS because we have a CEO [chief executive officer] and [similarly], we do not need a treasurer because we now have a finance and administration manager.” Mittawa said this is part of the revive, rebrand and reform agenda.

Sulom GS Williams Banda was not available for comment yesterday, but treasurer Allie Mwachande confirmed the development.

Mwachande: I support best practices. I Sulom

He said: “It is 100 percent true that we discussed and agreed to proceed that way for the good of the game.

“Personally, I will support best practices that will take football forward.”

Mighty Wanderers CEO Panganeni Ndovi has since hailed the development, saying the proposed amendment appears to be in line with corporate governance standards “increasingly demanded within the modern football ecosystem”.

He said: “Contemporary football administration requires clear separation between strategic oversight and operational execution. Where executive positions duplicate or overlap with secretariat functions, inefficiencies and blurred lines of accountability inevitably arise.”

“In that regard, the abolition of the positions of GS, vice- GS and treasurer, if properly structured, would streamline decision – making , strengthen professional administration and allow the secretariat to operate with defined authority and responsibility.”

Ndovi also said the reform is, in many respects, long overdue.

He said: “It has the potential to reduce redundant structures and eliminate operational bottlenecks that have historically affected league management.

“That said, the success of the reform will depend on the clarity of the amended constitutional provisions, particularly on delineation of powers, reporting lines, financial oversight mechanisms and safeguards against concentration of authority. If implemented with proper checks and balances, this change could enhance transparency, efficiency, and institutional credibility within the league framework
