Public- listed hotel chain Sunbird Tourism Limited has ventured into mushroom production in a bid to add flavour to its variety of locally produced vegetables for all its customers.

This was announced on Friday during the closure of a refresher course for the hotel chain’s vegetable and flower gardens supervisors.

Sunbird Lilongwe manager Virginia Mahata said while the hotels are offering total guest experience through seamless beauty of gardens, Sunbird will now start growing its own mushrooms.

“Our gardens and surroundings play a crucial role in our respect. We believe that our guests take pride when they take a stroll in well tendered, looked after and maintained gardens to have a feel of the much needed fresh air, apart from just admiring the beauty. Right from the Porte Coche, to reception desk and finally to the room, the guest should feel and experience beauty.

“The unique feature with the 2013 refresher course is the new aspect of growing our own mushrooms and we will now be able to offer fresh mushrooms from our own gardens hence improved freshness quality and more value adding.

This will also be cost effective,” explained Mahata. One of the supervisors Anthony Mlotha said they are happy to venture into mushroom production.

“It has been long overdue but the good thing is we are ready to do it for our customers,” he said.
