Temwa ends4-match goal drought

US-based women’s football star Temwa Chawinga on Sunday ended her four-match scoring drought for her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) outfit Kansas City (KC) Current.

The Scorchers forward netted the fourth as KC Current beat FC Bay 4-1.

It must have provided some relief for the 26-year-old who, prior to Saturday’s match, last scored on March 30 in a 3-0 win over Utah Royals.

Temwa got on the score-sheet in the 63rd minute when she cooly slotted the ball past FC Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz in a one-on-one situation according to kansascitycurrent.com.

the goal took the 2024 NWSL top scorer and Most Valuable Player’s tally to four, three behind leading scorer Esther Gonzalez of Gotham FC.

KC Current top the 14-team league with 18 points from eight matches.

Temwa was not available for comment yesterday, but her manager Theana Msolomba said it was just a matter of time for the striker to bounce back.

“NWSL teams have done some homework on her [considering her exploits in her debut season last year], but Temwa is driven by challenges,” she said.

Last season, Temwa made history in the US women’s top-flight when she scored record 20 goals in a single season.
