Tevet engages private sector

To avoid a repeat of the cashgate that has rocked the public sector, Tevet with request from companies conducted a Fraud Detection and Prevention Training Course which had 25 participants from different organisations.

Speaking during the graduation closure of the training at Crossroads Hotel, Tevet board member Alexander-Alain Kalanda, told the participants and representatives of companies that it is not only the public sector that was affected by fraud but even the private sector is prone to fraud.

“Billions of kwacha are suspected to have been siphoned from government coffers in a syndicate dubbed ‘cash-gate. Therefore this course cannot in Fraud and Detection is important and i hope participants will do a lot more after this training to prevent the occurrence of such incidents in their institutions,” said Kalanda.

Kalanda said his organisation believes a productive and effective private sector is critical in both the development of the country and the Tevet system.

“It is our core function to promote and provide short tailor-made programmes and in-service training, to improve the performance and productivity of the national economy,” he said.

The closure had coincided with the launch of the Tevet 2013-2014 Private Sector Training Progamme (PSTP).

Illovo Dwangwa assistant human resource manager Maston Mtambo hailed Tevet efforts in addressing skills and performance gaps through its Public and Private Sector Training.

“Tevet is playing a very important role to ensure hat both the private and public sector has a skilled about force. I have also to thank them for consulting first before coming up with such programmes. This affords us as companies’ opportunity to put forwards areas we need addressed,” said Mtambo.

Director of finance at Tevet Phanuel Hamsin said his organisation remains committed and focused in ensuring that a well trained and skilled work force is available in Malawi.

“The importance of partnership and participation from various players, the private sector included cannot be overemphasized if e are to progress. Our gratitude should go to different companies for their compliance to the Tevet levy. It is indeed with such funds that the Tevet authority is capable of carrying out its operations successfully,” said Hamsin.
