Thindwa chasing golden boot, degree

A cultured left foot on the pitch and brainy in class, Epac FC striker Ishmael ‘Mr Epac’ Thindwa has set his sights on killing two birds with one stone this season.

On Saturday, Thindwa said he was eyeing the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award and attaining a Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) at Exploits University in Lilongwe.

“I want to be the top scorer again. Last season, I scored 16 and missed the Golden Boot Award by two goals [behind eventual winner Vincent Chinthenga]. I am combining school with football successfully. It is about time management. I am now in the final year of my degree programme,” he said in a post-match interview after scoring in Epac’s 1-0 beating of Big Bullets.

In scoring at Kamuzu Stadium, Thindwa joined the league’s top scorers’ list on six goals from 12 games or a goal every two games. He has company at the top of the goals alongside Dickson Mbetewa (Red Lions) and Muhamad Sulumba of Blantyre United.

Gastin Simkonda scored once and Crispin Fukizi bagged a hat-trick in Moyale Barracks’ 4-0 beating of Mzuzu United to become the second leading scorers on five goals.

Joel Chipofya and Manasseh Chiyesa both of Kamuzu Barracks, Wongani Zulu (Evirom FC), Moyale’s Deus Nkutu, Peter Menyani (Mponela United) and Kumbukani Mwambene from Red Lions all have four goals.

The Super League of Malawi says 204 goals have now been witnessed and “as the log is showing, there is a tight race this far”.
