UNDP boosts Malawi justice ICT system

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) yesterday donated information and communications technology (ICT) equipment worth $108 000 (K189 million) to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to enhance its electronic case management.

Receiving the equipment at the Ministry of Justice headquarters in Lilongwe, DPP Masauko Chamkakala said the gadgets will help in the safety of case files, analysis and maintenance of data, speed and efficiency in case handling.

“With this equipment, our capacity has been boosted, now we will be able to manage all cases electronically, thus knowing how many cases of which type we have, the available evidence and it will also help us to quickly determine which cases need priority,” he said.

The donation follows a request that the DPP’s office made for the same in June 2024.

The equipment includes tablets, all-in-one computers, printers, servers, firewalls, and network essentials which UNDP officer-in charge resident representative Nanise Saune-Oaloewai said will significantly enhance the DPP’s operations.

She echoed Chamkaka la’s statement that the equipment will streamline case management processes and improve data collection, storage, and analysis, ensuring a more efficient and effective justice system.

“This handover is part of a broader initiative under the e-justice concept, which aims to enhance the capacity of justice institutions to operat ional i se their case management system and deliver quality services to the people of Malawi.

“We recognise the critical role of the DPP in ensuring that justice is served, and we are committed to supporting your efforts through

technical assistance, capacity building, and the provision of essential resources,” said Saune- Oaloewai.

The Judiciary rolled out an electronic case management system in 2015 in response to public sector reforms to eliminate instances of lost case files, speed up file processing procedures and monitoring of progress made
