Mzimba Heritage Association has planted 1 000 trees in Inkosi Mtwalo at Ezondweni in the district.

Speaking during the tree-planting exercise on Saturday, the group’s chairperson (Mzuzu Chapter) Bertha Kanyinji said the recent effects of climate change are a result of deforestation, among others.

“We urge people in the area to take care of the trees,” she said.

The group’s national chairperson the Reverend Overtone Mazunda hailed the youth for joining the initiative of planting trees.

“The youth should take a leading a role in restoring the environment,” he said.

Inkosi Jalavikuba, who was the guest of honour, suggested the need for people to find alternatives to charcoal.

“Planting trees is not an option; we have to, and yes, we need to take care of the trees, but we also have to encourage people to use alternative sources of energy when cooking. Charcoal-making is contributing to deforestation,” said the Chief.

Malawi is losing forestry cover at an alarming rate of about 32 000 hectares every year. The major driver of the loss is cutting down trees for charcoal and firewood
