Zomba Catholic Secondary School will celebrate its platinum jubilee in October, marking 75 years of existence since the institution opened its doors in 1942.

Speaking when the alumni of the school toured the institution on Saturday to appreciate its current state, chairperson of the jubilee’s organising committee, Leonard Kalindekafe, said there is greater need for the alumni to give back to the school to maintain its rich history in the provision of quality education.

He said many people, including those in influential positions, have benefitted from the institution; hence, it would be imperative for them to give back to the school in various forms.

Kalindekafe, who is the executive dean for School of Climate and Earth Sciences at Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must), said the school is lacking some essential things that may affect its performance in the long run.

He said: “The school has a lot of success stories since time immemorial. It has managed to produce the best alumni in the country who are making it big in our society, and it is important that the school keeps on growing and become more vibrant through the active participation of the alumni themselves.”

Kalindekafe said the alumni plan to raise funds to build a K600 million double storey hostel for the students  to ease accommodation challenges as the school is now enrolling more students.

In his remarks, the school’s head Brother Francis Jumbe said the platinum celebrations symbolises excellence bearing in mind that the school boasts alumni who have raised its status.

“Celebrating 75 years is a reflection of what the school has achieved and what impact it has had in the society and see how we can forge ahead,” he said.

Zomba Catholic Secondary School alumni include Cabinet ministers, principal secretaries and chief executive officers. n
