Zomba City Queens clinch Fifa honours

Listen to this article

Zomba City Queens on Sunday thumped Sitima Yoce Sisters 6-0 in the district final of the Fifa/FAM Under-20 women football cup played at Zomba Community Centre ground.

It was all systems go for the Queens as they pressed their opponents for an early opener. Their efforts paid dividends when Maggie Abel broke loose on the right-flank and released a cross which was headed home by Chimwemwe Billie.

A few minutes later, Abel doubled the advantage when she capitalised on Sitima’s poor defending. The one-sided affair saw Billie claim a double with a clinical finish following a well-weighted cross on the right by Isabel Maliza.

Thereafter, Maliza turned from provider-to-finisher when she made a solo run to beat the advancing Sitima goalkeeper to rest the scores at 4-0 at half-time.

Abel and Maliza claimed their second goals of the match to finish the game at 6-0.

Before prize presentation, Southern Region Women Football Committee chairperson Catherine Chikandula was grateful for the competition.

“This is good development for the young players in the country. I am thankful to Fifa as well as FAM for sponsoring the competition. It is my hope that the trend will continue for the benefit of the young ones in women football,” said Chikandula.

For being district champions, Zomba City Queens received K40 000 (about $100) whereas Sitima Yoce Sisters went home K25 000 (about $62.50) richer.

Police Secondary School received K15 000 (about $37.50) as third-placed team. The K5 000 (about $12.50) Golden Boot Award went to Mary Chavinda of Zomba City Queens who finished with 19 goals.

The two finalists will represent the Eastern Region at the regional competition in the near future.
