A consortium of three environmental organisations has embarked on a clean-up exercise in and around Mangochi Main Market to help improve sanitation there.

The consortium consists of Wilt Hunger Hilff (WHH), Water and Environmental Sanitation Management (Wesn) and Waste Malawi.

The consortium’s spokesperson Harold Chirwa said the grouping was implementing a two-year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Wash) project to improve sanitation in public places, improving water supply and promoting businesses.

“The consortium thought it wise to come here at Mangochi Main Market to remove the waste because it is in line with the objectives of the project, which attempts to improve sanitation in public places,” Chirwa said.

“The project will not only target Mangochi Central Market, it will also renovate toilets and water kiosks at Mangochi Bus Terminal, Mangochi Central, Ntangaluka and Chomba markets,” he said.

Apart from Mangochi, Chirwa said the project would also be implemented in Zomba and Liwonde with K100 million funding from the European Union (EU).
