NM Super League outfit Blue Eagles FC have released six players on performance grounds.

In a press release issued on Monday, the Malawi Police Service (MPS)-sponsored club explained that services of Lazarus Nyemera, Patrick Phiri, Henry Misinjo, Brian Msumatiza, Mphatso Philiemon and Tony Mbulu are no longer required following the recommendation of the technical panel.

Eagles escaped relegation on the final day

“We cannot thank them enough for their evident passion and dedication during their stay at Nankhaka. Wishing them all the best for the future,” reads part of the statement.

Eagles vice-general secretary Solomon Mchawi yesterday said they have used Article 5 of the players contracts, which gives the club freedom to release them  when their services are no longer required.

“Based on this fact and the recommendation of the technical panel, we thought it wise to release the six players based on the prevailing circumstances, which I can confirm that had to do with their performance,” he said.

Mchawi added that the development means that as they prepare for next season, there are some new faces that the club has targeted to sign as replacements for those that have been released.

One of the released players yesterday said they could not comment on the matter as they are yet to be served with official communication regarding the latest development.

“As for me, I have heard about the development but I cannot comment because I have not yet received official communication from the club,” Philiemon said.

The news comes a few weeks after the Eagles decided not to renew the contract of their former coach Gerald Phiri.

Later, the Area 30 outfit roped in former Civil United assistant coach Elia Kananji as co-coach alongside Christopher Sibale, who was elevated from the Eagles’ youth team. Both were given a one-year performance-based contract.

In the 16-team 2020/21 Super League, Eagles had one of their worst seasons in which they escaped relegation on the final day of the league.

The Area 30-based side finished on 12th position in the 16-team league  with 32 points from 30 games, 30 points behind eventual champions Nyasa Big Bullets.
