Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has adjusted upwards its water tariffs effective October 1 this year.

In a press statement published this week, BWB said the minimum charge for any consumption of less than 5 000 litres per month is now K1 446. 40 (US$3). This includes water supplied from communal water points or kiosks and households charged per 10 litres.

For water supplies to institutions with a consumption of up to 10 000 litres per month, the minimum charge is now K5 188.80 while commercial entities who also exceed 10 000 litres a  month of water consumption will now be paying  an average of K5 825.49 (US$15).

Water for industrial use whose consumption rate is up to 10 000 litres per month is now pegged at a minimum of K7 886.13 (US$21) per month.

In the statement, BWB states that the minimum charges mean that a customer will be charged the stated amount for no or any consumption which is equal to or  less the maximum volume in that category.

The latest adjustment comes in the wake of some residents in such peri-urban areas like Chirimba complaining of inconsistent water supply from BWB.

In March this year, BWB also made an upward adjustment on water tariffs attributing it to the rising costs of delivering water supply services to customers.
