Cadecom disburses cash, flour to needy people
Isabel Piringu and Nyozeni Yusuf of Traditional Authority (T/A) Lundu in Blantyre could not hold their excitement after receiving K100 000 each from the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (Cadecom).
Speaking in an interview on Saturday after receiving the money meant to buy food during the lean season, Piringu, who is in her late 80s, said she believed that God saw her needs and visited her through Cadecom.
“This money will go a long way to address some of the challenges we are facing. We are really struggling here due to the impact of the El Nino weather phenomenon,” she said while being assisted to walk due to her old age.
Yusuf, on the other hand, said the money will help to alleviate hunger in her family.
Blantyre Archdiocese through Cadecom is implementing a number of projects in Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe, Mwanza and Neno in response to recent disasters that hit the Southern Region such as Cyclone Freddy.
In an interview after disbursing money to 200 households and soya porridge flour to 500 additional families in T/A Lundu, Blantyre Archdiocese vicar general monsignor Boniface Tamani said the support was in response to Christ’s teaching of “feed those who are hungry”.
On her part, Cadecom Blantyre diocesan secretary Mandinda Zungu said her organisation will continue with the support to reach out to many people affected by various disasters.
“We got support through the Episcopal Conference of Malawi from Caritas Italiana and Caritas Korea responding to the Cyclone Freddy,” she said.
