As Nomads end Tigers’ unbeaten run

Rookies Evirom FC chose the perfect setting and moment to end their search for a first TNM Super League win and with it, stop holders Silver Strikers’ unbeaten run yesterday at Kamuzu Stadium.

Evirom captain Harold Zulu scored from the penalty spot on the 31st minute to excite the partisan crowd and impress new Flames interim coach Tom Saintfiet and his assistants Eddington Ng’onamo and Patrick Mabedi who were watching from the VIP Stand.

The reaction from Evirom coach Mario Gadaga was that of utter relief. He, after the final whistle, threw himself to the ground, kissed the artificial turf on the byline while uttering a small prayer.

“I am speechless…This is a reward for the faith and patience that our fans from Ndirande Township have always shown in us. People need to understand that it takes time to get a result; we just needed that luck. We were not bad, it was just time,” he said.

Evirom moved off the foot of the table to five points while Silver, who face Red Lions today in Zomba, remain ninth on nine points from six games.

It was a closely contested match which had the Bankers striker Rodrick Gonani missing a free header before defender Wonder Jelemani fouled Ongani Zulu for his elder brother Harold to score from the spot past goalkeeper Charles Swini.

The Bankers coach Frank Ndawa refused to grant the press post-match interviews.
