Salima Town Hammers have failed to defend their place in the K6 million (about $15 000) Chipiku League Premiership Division.

They lost 2-0 to Division One Kasungu Medicals in a play-off on Wednesday at Nankhaka ground.

The game curtain-raised Central Region Presidential Cup encounter between Silver Strikers and Santhe Admarc, which the Bankers won 3-1.

Lilongwe and Districts Football League (LDFL) gave Salima Town Hammers a chance to defend their place after they finished in the relegation zone.

With the victory, Kasungu Medicals have been promoted to the Premier Division together with Namitete Young Rangers, Hardknockers and Dedza Strikers.

Medicals had the victory courtesy of goals from Aaron Tembao and Moshi Mtengo, who scored in each half.

Hammers coach Wellington Buwa described the result as a big blow.

“It is a reality too hard to swallow after being in the Premiership for more than 10 years. It is like we are going to another world,” said Buwa.

He, however, said they will fight back to regain their position next season.

Meanwhile, the LDFL will hold its annual general meeting on Saturday at Bridgeville Hotel, in preparation for the start of the 2013-14 season on June 8.
