India donates 1 000MT rice to Malawi

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) commissioner Charles Kalemba has commended the Indian Government for supporting Malawi’s efforts to provide aid to households affected by the ongoing food crisis worsened by the impact of El Nino.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Wednesday when the Indian Government donated 1 000 metric tonnes (MT) of rice to Malawi, he said the support has come at a time Malawi works to ensure the country is food secure.

He said: “We are working to ensure that all affected households receive the necessary support in a timely manner.

“So far, 80 to 90 percent of the aid has reached those in need with support being distributed first in the Southern and Central regions and gradually expanding to the North.”

Indian High Commissioner Shri Gopalakhrishnan said the donation underscores the strength of the partnership between India and Malawi.

“India and Malawi have a long-standing relationship. We have been supporting Malawi whenever there is a need,” he said.

The donation follows a humanitarian appeal that Malawi Government issued to manage food insecurity affecting 5.7 million people induced by El-Nino weather.
