JB, Muluzi hailed on ambassadorial work

Minister of Lands Deus Gumba has hailed former presidents Bakili Muluzi and Joyce Banda for their efforts towards the Cyclone Freddy recovery initiative.

The minister extended his profound gratitude to the two former presidents on Wednesday in an interview on the sidelines of a handover ceremony of 30 houses to Cyclone Freddy victims in Zomba Chisi Constituency, a day after handing over 45 others in Traditional Authority Phweremwe’s area in Phalombe District on Tuesday.

The houses were built by the Malawi Red Cross Society with funding from the Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation through Banda and Muluzi, who are goodwill ambassadors of the Cyclone Freddy recovery initiative and have been sourcing funds from well-wishers.

The two former presidents took over the ambassadorial roles after being approached by President Lazarus Chakwera in the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy in March 2023.

And in an interview, Gumba said both Muluzi and Banda need to be applauded for their roles as regards the recovery initiative citing the construction of the houses as an example of the commendable work they are doing.

He said: “Their excellencies Joyce Banda and Bakili Muluzi have been going flat out reaching out to different donors sourcing resources to help in this initiative which is changing lives.”

Zomba Chisi Constituency legislator (Democratic Progressive Party), Mark Botoman, said in a separate interview that the houses have provided a huge relief to the cyclone victims in the constituency.

He said both Muluzi and Banda need to be recognised for their work as regards sourcing financial resources.

“Malawi, like most of the countries in the world, uses nuclear technologies in agriculture, manufacturing, construction, mining, and health,” she said.

The training was facilitated by two technical officers from the IAEA, Mohammad Yousif Hamadalneel and Melody Nsofwa who took participants through practical and theoretical response.

Malawi operates under the Atomic Energy Act of 2011 which provides for the development and maintenance of national Radiological Emergency Response Plans for responding to potential radiological emergencies.
