Towering defender Clement Kafwafwa feels it is time to hang up his boots after playing for over 15 years, including a decade in Denmark.

Kafwafwa, who was one of the few Malawian footballers playing in Europe, told The Nation in an interview on Tuesday that this year will be the last in active football.

“My contract with Danish club [NB Bornholm] expired, but if an opportunity comes my way, I could take it, but it will be for a very short period because I do not want to play beyond February next year,” said the former Flames defender.

The 34-year-old has now turned to coaching and is attending a C Licence course organised by the Southern Region Football Coaches Committee in Blantyre.

“My focus will be drilling kids. Apart from that, I also studied for postgraduate diploma in business management and, who knows, I could turn to business,” he said.

Kafwafwa, whose last team on the local scene was the now defunct MDC United, said while in Europe he attended coaching clinics in Spain and Denmark.

He said his most memorable moment as a player was when he helped his former club Lolland Falster Alliancen earn promotion from second to first division in 2005.

“I became the first-ever black captain for the team and for that I have fond memories,” said Kafwafwa.

He last played for the national team in 2008.
