In a bid to equip teachers with football expertise, the Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) in partnership with Carlsberg Malawi Limited, is planning a 10-day coaching course for teachers in the first week of January 2014.

Massa general secretary Blackson Malamula and Carlsberg Malawi Limited senior brands manager (non-alcoholic) Titha Mbilizi, confirmed the development in separate interviews.

Malamula said the course is targeting school teachers because most of them are not trained in coaching.

“The objective of the course is to empower teachers to effectively coach their school teams. We cannot afford to rely on outside help as this affects the performance of the teams,” said Malamula.

The coaching course, which will take place in Blantyre, will be facilitated by Flames technical director John Kaputa.

Malamula said Massa will provide accommodation for 45 teachers who are expected to attend the course. He added that each teacher will pay K10 000 (about $25) as participation fee to towards paying for Kaputa’s services..

While confirming co-sponsoring the course, Mbilizi could not say what specific role Carlsberg Malawi Limited will play.

The last time Massa organised such a course was in 2011 in Mchinji where 35 teachers took part.
