PAC engages Nkhotakota council on reforms progress

Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairperson Mark Botomani has asked Nkhotakota District Council officials to seek financial assistance from companies operating in the district to support its public reform aspirations.

Speaking during a public sector reforms assessment meeting on Tuesday, Botomani expressed satisfaction with the council’s aspirations, saying they are in line with Malawi’s 2063 agenda.

He asked the district council to partner with companies such as Illovo Sugar, Ethanol and African Parks to raise funds for implementing some of its projects.

“We are very satisfied with the council’s vision and we have been briefed on many things including the establishment of mega-farms and tourism parks, however, we can say there is a gap since the council is not using the companies that are here in Nkhotakota making a lot of money through tourism ventures and sugar production,” said Botomani.

Nkhotakota District commissioner Ben Matengeni Tohno commended PAC for visiting the council and expressed hope that the committee will sell the district’s public reforms to other partners and relevant government boards for financial support.

He said the district council will engage the companies in meetings to map the way forward.

“This is very crucial and we will organise a stakeholders meeting where we will engage our partners such as Illovo, Ethanol, African Parks and other organisations in the district,” said Tohno.

Nkhotakota District flagship projects include the establishment of mega-farms, a tourism park, fish farming and industrial park development focusing on sugar, fertiliser and textile production.
