The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has assured all eligible voters that they will be allowed to cast their votes even beyond 7pm, when polling stations are expected to officially close as long as they have already queued.

Chairperson Justice Rita Makarau told the press at the central command center in Harare that ZEC has noted the lengthening of voters’ queues as the day progressed.

“But we have instructed polling staff to ensure that notwithstanding the long queues, they must ensure that everyone has been assisted before 7pm,” she added.

She also called on voters initially refused voting because their names could not be traced in the register to go back and vote at any polling center as long as they have registration slips.

Earlier in the day, such slips were not being considered genuine by the electoral staff.

The ZEC will again update stakeholders on how the voting process has been at 8pm, an hour after polling closes.
