Temwa on target as her team drops first points
US-based Malawian women’s footballer Temwa Chawinga yesterday scored her second consecutive goal as Kansas City Current played out a one-all draw against National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) reigning champions Gotham FC.
It was the first time that her club dropped points, having won all their first three matches.
Nevertheless, they still sit at the pinnacle of the 14-team league with 10 points, a point above second and third-placed North Carolina and Washington Spirit, respectively.
According to kansascitycurrent.com, Temwa broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when she coolly chipped the ball over advancing Gotham goalkeeper.
But the hosts pulled level through Esher Gonzalez in the 51st minute.
In an interview soon after the match, the 2023 world football top scorer said it was a tough match.
She said: “We were up against the champions at their backyard and we knew it wouldn’t be easy. But we gave them a good run for their money.
“Of course, it was the first time for us to drop points, but I would say it was a point gained other than two lost.”
Temwa also said she was happy to score back-to-back.
“It further boost my confidence and I hope to continue scoring,” she said.
The Scorchers prolific forward is among 14 players that have scored two goals each, a goal behind leading scorer Uchenna Kanu of Racing Louisville.
