Huawei for collaboration in cybersecurity
High tech firm Huawei Technologies says it has a critical role in helping secure digital infrastructure and hold ethical standards with focus on collaboration with Malawian players.
The Chinese information, Communications and technology multinational company’s managing director Gu Mu says they aim to ensure that Malawi’s future in cyberspace is both secure and sustainable.
In the country, the firm works in partnership with government and local telecom service providers such as Airtel and TNM. It supplies network infrastructure, including 3G, 4G and 5G technologies, where it has the responsibility to secure both communication networks and data flowing through them.

“While challenges [in the field] remain, Huawei’s ongoing efforts to adhere to ethical cyber-security practices provide a strong foundation for addressing these concerns. Our commitment to ethical cybersecurity in Malawi exemplifies how global tech companies can positively impact developing nations,” he said.
Gu said through responsible data management, transparency, collaboration with local authorities and capacity-building initiatives, the company is positioning itself as a key player in the fight against cyber threats in Malawi.
He adds: “By maintaining these ethical standards, Huawei can continue to a safer and more secure digital environment for all Malawians.”
In a release, the company said ethical considerations in cybersecurity are central to Huawei’s approach. The company adds that it emphasises data privacy, ensuring that personal and sensitive information is protected.
It adheres to international data protection standards, such as GDPR as well as local regulations in Malawi. In addition to safeguarding data, transparency plays a key role.
“Huawei regularly shares information on its cybersecurity practices and compliance efforts which help build trust with both the Malawian government and citizens,” says the company.
In an interview on Wednesday, Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima)ICT manager Daniel Mpuwa emphasized the need for cybersecurity.
He said: “Cybersecurity is important because almost everything we do these days involves technology. As such, people need their information to be protected.
“For example, hospitals need to keep patients’ information secret. So any transaction done on Internet should be secure.”
Mpuwa advised the public to not only be excited with using the technology, but also the security of their information.
