The Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) will on September 27 hold demonstrations in Mzuzu to protest government’s monopoly over the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

Cama executive director John Kapito on Tuesday confirmed that the demonstration will be staged in Mzuzu. However, he said the Northern Region team was organising the protests.

Cama regional coordinator (North) Isaac Gondwe said it was high time MBC started balancing its political news and programmes to give Malawians a wide range of views to reflect what President Joyce Banda and Minister of Information and Civic Education Moses Kunkuyu assured the public when they assumed power.

“We are not happy with MBC’s biased broadcasting. It runs on taxpayers’ money, so we will demonstrate,” said Gondwe.

Reacting to Cama’s position, Kunkuyu said government last month sourced views from different political parties on how best MBC can operate as a public broadcaster and issues of fair coverage were raised.

“Those planning demos don’t watch or listen to MBC because opposition parties are being covered. Rallies for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Dr Lazarus Chakwera have been on TV, UDF has also been on TV and radio, so what opening up are they talking about? Ask opposition, they will tell you they are being covered.

“Cama doesn’t know what it is saying and why it will demonstrate, but we will still receive the petition,” said Kunkuyu.
