Genetrix Hockey Club men’s team returned home on Tuesday with a trophy following their triumph in the three-day Phoenix Assurance Hockey Championships in Lusaka, Zambia last weekend.

The team summed-up an excellent display of skills in the five-team competition with a 3-1 victory over Lusaka Sharks A team on Sunday. They beat Lusaka Tigers 3-0 in the opening match on Friday and beat Lusaka Sharks B 3-0 and DE Stars 1-0 on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Their ladies’ side finished third in the four-team category after winning one of their three games. This was their first international experience. They beat DE Stars 4-3, but tumbled 3-0 to Lusaka Sharks and 2-0 to Lusaka Tigresses.

But the men team’s glory was worth celebrating by both sides, according to the club’s general secretary Herbert Nkhoma.

This was the team’s second participation in an international competition. They made their international debut in the 2010 African Club Championships in Lusaka, where they finished last on position 11.

“The men’s triumph in Zambia is a delight to everybody at our club and it has made Malawi proud. We are happy that we have won a trophy in our second appearance at an international competition,” said Nkhoma.

He said they are encouraged by the results which show that hockey is improving in the country.

The Zambian trip was sponsored by the Zambian Hockey Association, Monolux Paints, Petroda Malawi, Manica, Tetratronics, Agason Motors and Chiwawa Nkhoma.
