Not every friendly is a friend

Many times as we are walking, driving or shopping, we meet people who strike conversations with us. Sometimes we initiate it and we do it all in the name of co-existing and simply treating each other as humans. It can be absurd and boring to ignore people around us. There is no malice intended in talking to each other and we should because it makes life easier.

But what if some conversations are meant to distract us? Well, I would not be surprised, but its’ pretty shocking. A friend was walking home from work the other day when she met a friendly young man who struck a conversation with her. The topic was the rains and biting economic situation. She noted another fellow approaching from the opposite side, but naturally, she must have felt at ease realising the company of the seemingly friendly young man.

The next thing she woke up in a puddle of mud, dazed and robbed. It was only after she knocked at an elderly couple’s door that she learnt of the deep cuts at the back of her head and forehead. What seemed like a friendly chat turned out to be a deadly plan to attack her. One of the assailants was simply trying to gain her trust to prevent resistance or shouts for help. The robbers’ aim was for a swift, but successful mission. It worked.

Cases of such distractions are many. Even when driving, there will be unsolicited lookouts helping motorists navigate corners or reversals. Don’t trust anybody. Not every Good Samaritan has good intentions. There are motives to everything and some are not good at all.

A word of caution. Be wary of any help, attention or conversation. Gone are the days when we would chat-up strangers. There is so much animosity and rage that strangers are holding grudges. They want what you have regardless of how long it took you to own it. They dislike progress. Guard your property and life with all you got. 

The planting season is worse because thieve take advantage of the shielded pathways. Open fields are now havens for robbers. I understand in some areas, people are being attacked in broad day light. While one may decide to get home before 6 pm for safety, bear in mind that attackers can strike at any time. And because they move in groups, they have an added advantage anytime. They are precise in their game and know exactly where to strike for one to lose consciousness.  If possible, move in groups.
